Other Pupil Leadership Roles

House Captains

At Glenthorne Community Primary School, we operate a house system. Our school is divided into three houses: Eaton, Rosemary and Hawkins. Our names are taken from key figures/families from our local area.

Eaton (Green House) is named after the Easton family, who were key members of our local area. They provided work for many families through their mining company. They are still a huge source of employment in Cheslyn Hay. The factory and quarry produce concrete products.

Hawkins (Red House) is named after another local family. They are best known as owning coal pits, which provided a source of employment for the area.  The family business produced bricks and tiles, still seen in many homes today. The Hawkins name is now associated with sport and many of our pupils play for Hawkins football teams.

Rosemary (Blue House) is named after Rosemary Tiles. This tile works provided employment for many people in our local area. You may recognise the name as one of our roads- Rosemary Road- is named after this.

Our houses represent key local historical figures which upheld many of the same values we do today including: a sense collaboration (they built a team through their workforce), respect (they demonstrated care for their workers) and high expectations (they pushed themselves to create successful businesses).

We represent our houses through sporting events, competing against each other during Sports Day.

We also work together within our houses to collect house points. These are rewarded for high standards of work, effort, behaviour, collaboration, kindness, etc.

House points are counted weekly by our House Captains and results are shared with pupils during our Celebration assembly.

Eco-Monitors

Our Eco-Monitors are representatives from each class who attend meetings to find different ways to make Glenthorne more eco-friendly.  Our Eco-Monitors have taken on the responsibility to monitor reducing waste and saving energy within school. They complete litter picking tasks and encourage their peers to put rubbish in the bin and recycle in their classrooms. They regularly monitor the energy use in school and complete a daily checklist of energy saving tasks.

Sports Leaders

At Glenthorne, we have our Year 5 Sports Leaders as part of our PE provision, who regularly meet to discuss any ideas regarding physical education. Sports leaders have an opportunity to share their own thoughts and opinions with the group and collectively agree on any decisions that are made.

Sports Leaders apply at the start of each academic year by submitting their application stating why they think they would make an excellent candidate for the job and most importantly, why they want to be one. Sports Leaders are trained at the beginning of the year to lead activities and games with younger children and are taught the important qualities that are needed when working with younger children across school.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Setting up equipment during PE lessons
  • Helping out during sporting competitions at Glenthorne
  • Organising kits
  • Refereeing / Umpiring
  • Helping out with members of staff during sports events (e.g. leading the warm up for younger before an event)
  • Arranging playground games at lunchtimes
  • Contributing to the arrangements and organising of Sports afternoons / Sports Day

Healthy Hearts

Healthy Hearts is an important part of our lunchtime provision. Children volunteer at the beginning of each term to be part of the Healthy Hearts team. The children who choose to volunteer will be provided with the necessary training and resources to support them. Healthy Hearts is aimed at encouraging all children to participate in some form of physical activity during lunch times. Those who volunteer to help with the delivery of Healthy Hearts will set up a range of structured activities that children in all year groups can take part in. When a child successfully completes an activity, they will receive a ticket which enters them into the termly draw where they will have the opportunity to win a range of prizes. As well as the physical benefit, Healthy Hearts aims at building on children's determination, resilience and perseverance.

Playground Pals

The Playground Pals are an important part of school life. Children volunteer to be a Playground Pal and make the commitment to help encourage happy and sociable playtimes. They will be a point of contact for children during breaks to help encourage games and sort out any minor concerns. They do not replace the role of the teacher in sorting out problems, but are a support to the children and staff on duty.

Digital Leaders

Digital Leaders are chosen due to their skills with computing and technology. They are trained on how to support other using technology (including the staff at times!) They take a lead looking after our technology in school and reporting any defects or issues.

Forest Team

Our Forest Team are part of our wider Team, who look after and maintain our outside areas. Mrs Bates works with this team to make sure our Forest and outdoor areas are looked after as well as our local wildlife. Our Forest Team feed the birds and create areas for other wildlife to thrive.
