At Glenthorne, we believe that all children should have the chance to experience a wide range of sports and physical activity. The education of the pupils at Glenthorne is not solely about the gaining of knowledge and the acquisition of skills but to develop a love and passion for sports and living a healthy lifestyle. This is because we believe that the development of physical education, will in turn support the whole child and their wellbeing, thereby enabling them to flourish academically, equipping them with the knowledge and skills that will improve their life chances.
Our intention is for all pupils to learn how to plan, perform and evaluate skills, ideas and performances. Throughout all years, we cover a variety of different areas of PE such as: invasion games, gymnastics, dance, striking and fielding etc. We aim to provide opportunities to increase children’s self-confidence through an ability to manage themselves successfully in a variety of situations. All children are provided with opportunities to take part in a wide range of sports activities, which are carried out in a safe and supportive environment, where effort and hard work, as well as success, is celebrated. Enjoyment and working together as a team is promoted.
We have created a curriculum overview for PE that ensures all pupils cover a wide range of sports and skills throughout all year groups and revisit and enhance skills built from previous years. All children receive at least 2 hours of PE every week. As a school, we try to offer enrichment days every year to give children the opportunity to access new sports and experiences that we may not always be able to offer in PE lessons. Furthermore, as a school, we have invested a lot of time and effort in developing our extra-curricular clubs and offering the chance for pupils to compete against schools within our local area and county. We intend to promote positive attitudes towards living a healthy and active lifestyle through healthy snacks, lessons about health and fitness and the children participating in active lessons across different subjects, not just PE lessons.
As a result of all the hard work of staff and our pupils, we have been awarded Platinum status by School Games. The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Participating in this process allows schools to evaluate their PE provision and assists them in developing an action plan for future progress.
